The Right Grass for Seeding Your Lawn

Discerning well on the right grass for your lawn may not be high up on your priority list but it is something that you also need to give some thought into. Picking the right grass may mean a make or break between having an environment-friendly lawn that will need low maintenance versus a lawn that is prone to weeds, diseases and pests. There are a couple of things to consider once you decide to take on this task.

Get to know your lawn. There is a wide variety of grass to choose from so before you drive up to your garden store, identify the basic conditions in your yard. Is it exposed to sunlight for most of the day? Know that grass grows best if it is located in an area that receives more than four hours of sunlight every day. With sunlight, photosynthesis is enabled which causes growth, resistance and tolerance to temperature and disease.

To avoid or reduce general wear and disease, the soil pH levels, phosphorous and potassium have to be maintained, meaning, there is a need to fertilize the lawn. There are other things to look into such as water drainage, soil fertility and acidity and your lawn’s inclination. When you know about these details, you can then pick the grass seed that is most suitable for your landscape. There is a lot to choose from as there are differences in colour, texture, tolerance to heat or cold, resistance to disease and pests and their preferred conditions.

After picking, there’s grass seed planting and maintenance, as well. These are not simple tasks. You will break a sweat. But these are all a small price to pay for that lush lawn that you and your family are rewarded with after all that hard work.
